An Introduction to Trauma and the Body: From Theory to Practice

Dr Liz Hall and ACC Midlands and East Anglia

Dr Liz Hall has been a clinical psychologist since 1974 and a psychotherapist since 1983.  She worked in the mental health services of the NHS in Scotland before moving into private practice in Lincoln in 1995.  Liz has over thirty years' experience of working with clients presenting complex trauma and dissociative states. She co-authored the book Surviving Child Sexual Abuse (with Siobhan Lloyd, 1989, updated 1993).

She now works in private practice with similar clients and has a busy forensic practice providing expert reports for the family courts.  Liz is the UK Training Organiser for the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute.  She has completed the Sensorimotor Trauma and Advanced Trauma Trainings (for working with complex trauma clients) and the Developmental Training and is also part of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute's Teacher-in-Training Programme.  She is currently doing the level 3 certification training.

This workshop will provide an introduction to working with the body within a talking therapy. It develops ideas that are based on the new understanding of the neurobiological substrates of trauma reactions and uses mindfulness as a tool. This allows examination of the impact of the trauma long after the event and prevents the retraumatisation of the client that often occurs through telling the story of the event. This will be a lecture-style presentation with possible use of video footage.  We will study:

  • The neurobiological underpinning of trauma
  • Symptom reduction and stabilisation in trauma clients (who often have difficulty in managing their autonomic nervous system's arousal response)
  • Applied mindfulness in therapy
  • The reinstatement of active defences, boundaries and somatic resourcing
  • Psychoeducation.

Women who sexually abuse children: challenging perceptions and awareness training

Sherry Ashfield, Lucy Faithfull Foundation

Our one-day course draws on lessons learnt from research and practice to increase knowledge about female sexual abuse and to develop skills for engaging with these women in  a gender responsive way.  It will be of interest to practitioners from health and social care, education and criminal justice.

This training course will be suitable for practitioners needing to develop their understanding of the wider implications of female sexual abuse.  It will also assist professionals to approach situations where female sexual abuse may have occurred with increased confidence and knowledge.

Drawing on research and our experience within the child protection and criminal justice systems, the course begins by looking at the difficulties encountered in identification of female sexual abuse.  We consider:

Challenges female abusers present to commonly held preceptions of female behaviour

Implications for victims of our inability to 'hear' their disclosures

This is followed by exploration of messages from research and practice regarding:

Prevalence of female sexual abuse of children

Similarities and differences identified between male and female sexual abusers

Impact issues for victims of female abusers

Characteristics of female abusers

Common typologies and abuse patterns

Skills which may assist in engaging the women in assessment or intervention interviews

Delivery will include information, anonymised case examples, discussion and group exercises.

Date: 15 September 2010

Venue: Birmingham

Cost: £155 including VAT & lunch

Conference For Those Supporting SRA Survivors

Harnhill Centre of Christian Healing and Mike Fisher and Dr Ruth Cureton

This conference is the second run under the auspices of the Fellowship of Christ the Healer, a group of leaders involved in the Christian healing ministry both in the UK and also abroad.

Those involved have seen the need for better support and more training for those involved in the care of survivors of ritual abuse or satanistic ritual abuse.  Many survivors are seeking help both through the conventional medical disciplines, and also through the Christian healing centres, churches and faith-based agencies.

A survey was done 3 years ago which showed that there were few places that were actually able to help survivors on a long-term basis, and so the first conference was held to support those involved in care.  Approximately 30 people came and found the experience challenging but helpful, and so two years later this follow-up conference is likewise aimed at helping those involved in caring: pastors, counsellors, prayer ministers, medical agencies, spouses, friends.

Date: 17-19 September 2010

Cost: £170 (residential) / £80 (non-residential)

Venue: Harnhill Manor, Gloucestershire, GL7 5PX
